THE STUDIO

Purpose-built to capture.

SoundSmith is not a general-purpose tracking room. Every decision — acoustic design, microphone placement, signal routing, monitoring — was made in service of one goal: capturing exceptional performances.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Acoustic design for acoustic instruments.

The room was designed from the ground up to work with guitars, acoustic instruments and voices. Controlled diffusion, a reflective hardwood performance floor, and carefully managed early reflections allow instruments to develop naturally without the room imposing its character on the recording.

The acoustic treatment is not cosmetic. It was designed and measured to produce a predictable, useful recording environment — one where the microphone hears the instrument, not the room.

The studio is also acoustically quiet. Low-noise HVAC, isolated mechanical systems, and careful construction mean that the noise floor of the room does not compete with the performance.

MICROPHONES

A collection built for acoustic instruments and voices.

The microphone collection at SoundSmith was assembled over time with a specific purpose: to capture acoustic instruments and voices with the full range of character and detail that makes a recording compelling.

The collection includes large-diaphragm condensers, small-diaphragm condensers, ribbons, and dynamics — each chosen for what it contributes to the system. The goal is not an impressive inventory; it is the right tool for the instrument and the moment.

PREAMPS & ANALOG PROCESSING

Analog front ends chosen for character and transparency.

The preamp collection spans a range of sonic characters — from transparent and extended to warm and colored — allowing the signal chain to be matched to the instrument and the production.

Analog processing — EQ, compression, saturation — is available at the front end and in the mix chain. The goal is not to process everything; it is to have the right options available when they serve the music.

ROUTING & COMPARISON

Compare microphones and signal chains without interrupting the session.

Computer-controlled routing makes it possible to compare microphones, preamps, and complete signal chains quickly — without repatching, without interrupting the performer, and without breaking the momentum of the session.

This is not simply a convenience. The ability to make meaningful comparisons while the artist is still in the moment changes the quality of the decisions that get made. The right microphone for this instrument, this room, this performance — not the one that was already set up.

MONITORING

Accurate monitoring at every listening level.

The monitoring system at SoundSmith was chosen and calibrated for accuracy. The goal is a listening environment where decisions made in the room translate reliably to the outside world — at every listening level, on every playback system.

Multiple monitoring options — main monitors, near-fields, and headphone monitoring — allow the engineer and artist to check the work from different perspectives without leaving the room.

THE SESSION EXPERIENCE

Quiet. Comfortable. Focused on the music.

Sessions at SoundSmith are designed around the performer. The room is acoustically quiet, the monitoring is accurate, the seating is ergonomic, and the workflow is unhurried.

The engineer and producer work from the same space as the performer. There is no glass, no talkback, no separation between the people making the record. The conversation is direct, the feedback is immediate, and the focus stays on the music.

The goal is a space where musicians can do their best work.
